From a very early age most of us are trained to give doctors a place next to god for they are often regarded as life savers. Have you ever imagined what would have happened if doctors did not have the medicines to treat people correctly.

Clinical research scientists and every person associated with this profession plays a major role in saving thousands of lives each year in a silent and uncelebrated manner. If you wish to join the league of these unsung heroes, here is the road map to do so.

Before you venture out into this career, bear in mind that the job of a clinical scientist is not one dimensional.  You can join this profession as a medical scientist, clinical lab technician, and medical and clinical lab technologist.

Medical Scientist

Any medicine before being commercially available has to pass through a number of rigorous tests. The job of a medical scientist is to run tests on humans with the new medications and monitor their results and effects depending upon the lifestyle changes and other health related issues.  Once you become a senior medical scientist, you shall then be entrusted with the job of supervising others students who shall be conducting these tests. The basic qualification needed to become a medical scientist is a degree in medicine (e.g. M.D.s or O.D.s). It is mandatory for a medicinal scientist to have the license to administer drugs to patients or treat those using medicines.

Medical and Clinical Lab Technician

The job of a medical lab technician is much easier than that of a medical scientist. Medical technicians usually carry out experiments on body fluids. They simply follow instructions regarding the tests and upload the results on the central database. They usually work under the supervision of laboratory administrative staffs. In order to qualify as a clinical research technician you need to have degrees in clinical laboratory studies. If you wish to specialize in a particular field, you should meet certain experience criterion and pass necessary exam.

Medical and Clinical Lab Technologist

The job of medical technologist is not very much different from that of a technician. The only difference which separates both of them is that clinical lab technologists can run more advanced testing procedure. The job of a technologist is more of a supervisory nature but it is not uncommon for them to specialize in certain positions. The basic qualification required for the post of a lab technologist is bachelor’s degree in the field related to medical laboratory testing. There are certain states where certification is required which can be obtained by passing certain examination.

Educational Career Requirements

Irrespective of which position you wish to qualify in the domain of clinical research, you need to have a master’s degree in biological sciences or medicine. A postgraduate doctorate degree is often regarded as an added bonus by many people. Graduate degree programs in biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, microbiology or neuroscience is often considered sufficient for students aspiring to build a career in clinical research. If you wish to give your career a different edge you can try some certification courses like the certified clinical research associate, certified clinical research coordinator and physician investigator which guarantees your level of expertise in the industry.

Other Key Skills and Salary

Besides having a degree in medicine and bioscience a candidate should also posess certain other key skills like  knowledge about circuit boards , ability to use  scientific database and graphic software, basic knowledge about electronic instruments and also relevant knowledge about laboratory equipments like laboratory flasks, petri plates is also mandatory. The average salary of a clinical research associate in the initial days of his career commences with $ 50000- 60,000 annually. Once you gain certain level of expertise and experience the salary goes up to 90,000 or even higher. In fact it is considered as one of the most well paying jobs in the United States provided you meet the entire required criterion.
