New H-1B bill proposed to discourage the US employers hiring immigrants?

  • Link Copied

Now that the people of America have democratically elected Donald Trump as their president, there are not much options left than to face the aggressive measures of the new president. The one big factor that every neighboring country worried about is the changes he might bring to the H-1B program.

A New H-1B bill was proposed?

Last week, a new bill on H-1B visa program was introduced which plans to double the salary of the H-1B visa holder. It prescribes hiking the salary to a minimum of $130000. It was already an expected move by Donald Trump and the primary aim of this move is not to give a hike to the immigrant H-1B workers but to indirectly discourage the employers to give jobs to H-1B visa immigrant workers. The theme of the bill was stated as intended to improve the number of jobs given to Americans rather than immigrants.

Nightmare for Tech Companies

As the majority of the top tech companies in the United States relies on immigrant workers to fulfill human resource requirement, this new bill, if passed, would definitely be a nightmare for these companies. Those a fraction of Americans claim this move would bring jobs to Americans, on the other hand, CEO’s of top Information Technology companies including Facebook CEO are fueling on this bill because they have to pay more wage to outside people which remain a burden to the company.

The advancement in Information Technology and the existence of top leading tech companies made America, the hub for global IT industry. At the same time, the demand for professionals with IT skills rose drastically as the number of companies increases in and around the United States. H-1B visas allow American firms to hire workers from other countries, provided those workers are paid the same salary that a U.S.-based hire would have earned. The program is a lottery system, and there is a hard cap on the number of workers that companies can hire every year. Executives who rely on the H-1B program claim it allows them to hire workers with specialized skill sets they wouldn’t have been able to find otherwise. Critics complain that the system allows companies to overlook perfectly capable American workers in favor of foreign ones who cost less.

This newly proposed H-1B Visa bill by California Congressman Zoe Lofgren was under the High Skilled Integrity and Fairness Act of 2017. “My bill will put light on skilled people who are really talented and after all The United states will have the best employees and my bill will ensure to pay more wage to American people than others. It will remove the hurdles to the students who are on F1 Visa as it will build a bridge from F1 Student status to Lawful Permanent residence and it removes the paperwork and reduces administrative cost and burdens of H1b filing requirement” said Lofgren.

In addition to this new bill, the president of the United States, Donald J Trump recently had signed a new bill that intends to restrict people from the below list of countries from entering the United States of America,

  • Iraq
  • Iran
  • Yemen
  • Libya
  • Somalia
  • Sudan

In spite of new bills proposed and passed restricting the number of H-1B immigrants, as long as the demand for the skilled professionals remains, the IT companies would keep hiring the immigrant workers.
