Do Indian H1B and L1 visa applicants need to worry about Donald Trump’s reforms?

  • Link Copied

As the entire world awaits patiently for the January 21st when Donald Trump’s first full day at office officially begins. Indians, H1B visa workers, and applicants, in particular, are the scared ones among them. Since Donald Trump has already listed out several reforms and modifications on the Immigration policies, it is most likely to be unfavorable for the immigrant workers in the United States. Ahead of his first day in office, two American lawmakers have introduced a bill that intends to modify several aspects of the H1B and L1 visa procedures and policies. Here are the key changes that this bill could bring which could sting H1B visa workers and immigrants in the United States,

Stricter Eligibility Criteria

Protect & Grow American Jobs Act proposes new changes to the eligibility criteria which the H-1B visa applicants should adhere to get approved.

Hike in Visa Cost

Though recently the H1B and L1 visa costs are significantly hiked in 2016, the new reform may include proposals to drastically hike the costs further.

Can’t escape the additional paperwork with Master’s degree

So far, the applicants with Master’s degree or higher are exempted from additional paperwork while applying for the H-1B visa permit.

Barring companies employing more H-1B workers

The bill also proposes the measure to cancel the license of companies that employs more than 50% of immigrant workers with the H-1B or L-1 visas. This rule is proposed for targeting companies that have more than 50 employees in their organization.

Steep raise to the minimum salary of H1B workers

Well, this might seem like a good news but it’s not. The proposal to hike the minimum salary of H-1B workers from $60,000 to $100,000 will force the companies to reduce the intake of H1B or L1 workers to their organization.

What are the hopes of Indian IT industry?

However the measures are intended to reduce the number of immigrant workers in the United States, Indian IT industry strongly believes the existing number of talents among the Native Americans cannot fulfill the demand existing among the IT companies in the US. It hopes to witness significant raise in the salary packages of Indian H1B workers in the country. The following data shows the number of H1B sponsorship offered by top IT companies the United States in the year of 2016,

Whatever the measure proposed on the immigration policies, the ultimate aim is to reduce the number of immigrant workers in the United States and thereby open opportunities for the Native Americans. However good it may sound to the Native Americans, Donald Trump may have shocking surprises in store that only future can reveal it…
