Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process of making a website rank high on Search Engine Result Page, with the objective to maximize the number of visitors to the site. It is the process of optimizing the key elements of a website to enable major search engines like Google to easily find and index the site so that it appears high on the list of search results returned by it.
Despite white-hat tactics and effective strategies, search engine optimization may not always work the way you expect. It is primarily on the basis of keywords that Google or other search engines index a page and give rankings. And if that is not done right, it may affect your website’s page ranking and online visibility considerably.
So, how can you guide search engines to improve the ranking of a website for the keywords you want? For this, you have to make sure that the search engines get the right signal from your page to index it, but that is a complex task. It is important that you understand the difference between optimization and over-optimization. Optimization helps improve page rankings, but over-optimization can generate just the opposite results. And it is often over-optimization that causes search engines to overlook your SEO efforts.
Here, we will see how to optimize a website for specific keywords and improve its page rankings.
1. Find Where You Rank Today
Before starting with anything, find out where your website ranks today for specific keywords you want to improve. Without knowing where you stand, you will be unable to measure progress of your Search Engine Optimization efforts. Generally, experts use a rank-tracking tool that is capable of automatically tracking your website ranking on a daily basis.
2. Explore and Use Keyword Variations
Optimizing your website for only one or two keywords isn’t a smart way to do SEO. Rather explore variations, and try to target your website for most of these keywords to increase your chances of being indexed by search engines. For this, type the target keyword in Google Keyword Tool. You should look for two things – first, find different variations of the keywords, and second, identify the competition for each of the keywords.

Visit Google and type the keyword. Look for the keywords suggested by the search engine as you type the keyword; web pages that appear on the first page of search engine results; and “related searches” at the bottom of the page. Effective keyword research will give you an idea of how difficult your target keyword is, and what choices you have.
3. Review Your On-Page SEO
Based on keyword research, you should set realistic expectations so that you can start with your on-page SEO efforts. On-page search engine optimization involves including the keywords in Page Title, Page Descriptions, H1 Tags, Page Content, etc. You can use several tools available to calculate the right keyword density and make recommendations for each element of your web page.
4. Use Structured Data
Rich snippets, Microdata, schemas, etc. are related to structured data. Though it is not a part of Google algorithm yet, it will soon be the trend of the industry. By implementing structured data, you can make it easy for Google and other search engines to understand what your website is all about. This enhances the chance of higher page ranking. It is important to know here that structured data is also available for articles and blogs.
5. Internal Linking
When you are trying to improve your web page’s ranking, you can use different variations of your target keyword as anchor text on other pages, and link them to the targeted page. It is a great SEO tactic, and helps Google identify the important pages of the website.
The above-mentioned techniques can help improve your page ranking for specific keywords.
