How to apply for OPT

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a temporary work authorization that allows international students in the United States on an F-1 visa to gain practical experience in their field of study. This program is designed to enable students to apply their academic knowledge professionally, enhancing their career prospects and facilitating their transition into the U.S. workforce.

Eligibility for OPT

  • To be eligible for OPT, students must Have had F-1 status for at least one academic year.
  • Be physically present in the United States at the time of application.
  • Apply within the appropriate time frame: up to 90 days before and 60 days after their program completion date.
  • They intend to work or volunteer in a professional development opportunity directly related to their major field.

Types of OPT

There are two types of OPT

  • Pre-completion OPT: Students may participate in OPT before completing their academic program, but the work must be directly related to their major study area. Students are limited to 20 hours of work per week while school is in session and can work full-time during breaks.
  • Post-completion OPT: Students may participate in OPT after completing their academic program. Post-completion OPT is full-time and can last up to 12 months.

STEM OPT Extension

International students with a degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field may be eligible for a 24-month extension of their OPT, known as the STEM OPT Extension. To qualify for the STEM OPT Extension, students must:

  • Have a degree in a STEM field.
  • Have a job offer in a field related to their STEM degree.
  • Work for an employer enrolled in the E-Verify program.

Application Process for OPT

To apply for OPT, follow these steps:

Request an OPT Recommendation from Your School: Complete an OPT Certification Course and submit an OPT I-20 request to your designated school official (DSO) at your academic institution.

Prepare Your Application: Gather all required documents, including a signed copy of your OPT I-20, Form I-765, and supporting materials as described in the form instructions.

File Your Application: You can file your application online at the USCIS website or by mailing a paper-based application packet to USCIS. USCIS encourages students to file their OPT application online.

Key Considerations

  • Be physically present in the United States at the time of application.
  • USCIS must receive your application within 30 days of your DSO's recommendation.
  • You must be in F-1 status at the time of application and intend to work or volunteer in a professional development opportunity directly related to your major field.

Employment Requirements

During OPT, students must:

  • Work at least 20 hours per week.
  • Maintain valid F-1 status.
  • Report changes in employment, address, and contact information to their DSO within 10 days.
  • Stay under 90 days of unemployment during the 12-month OPT period or 150 days during the 36-month STEM OPT Extension period.

Taxes and Health Insurance

While on OPT, students are subject to all applicable federal, state, and local taxes and must file a tax report. Students must also have health insurance, as they are no longer eligible for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) after completing their program. Students should research and compare health insurance plans to ensure sufficient coverage.

Conclusion

Optional Practical Training (OPT) and the STEM OPT Extension provide international students with valuable opportunities to gain practical experience in their field of study. By understanding the eligibility requirements, application process, and employment conditions, students can make the most of their OPT experience and enhance their career prospects in the United States.
