What are the mandatory online tutorial before applying for OPT?

Many universities require students to complete a mandatory online tutorial before applying for OPT. This tutorial typically covers important information about the OPT application process, eligibility requirements, and responsibilities as an OPT participant.

What are the steps to complete the online tutorial before applying for OPT?

To access the tutorial, log into your university’s portal and locate the OPT tutorial. Then complete the tutorial by following the instructions and complete all sections, including quizzes or assessments. It is recommended to complete the tutorial at least 3 to 4 months before your program completion. After completing the tutorial, you can request your OPT I-20 form from the Designated School Official (DSO)

What are the importance of the online tutorial?

Understanding requirements is a very important step. The tutorial helps you understand the eligibility criteria and necessary documentation for the OPT application. Completing the tutorial can help you avoid common mistakes in the application process. It is very important for you to ensure that you are aware of your responsibilities and compliance requirements as an OPT participant.  It is also a good idea to check with your university’s international student office for specific instructions and deadlines related to the tutorial.

The tutorial typically consists of multiple sections covering topics such as OPT eligibility requirements, Application process and timeline, required documents, reporting documents while on OPT, employment and unemployment rules. There may be quizzes or assessments at the end of each section to ensure you understand the material.

Is there any proof of completion to be submitted?

Upon completing the tutorial, you may need to submit proof of completion to your designated school official (DSO). This could be in the form of quiz result, certificate, or completion acknowledgement from the tutorial platform.

Is there any additional tips while completing the tutorial?

There are 3 major steps you need to follow. Step 1 is to Start Early. Step 2 is to Take Notes and Step 3 is to reach out for Help. Religiously following these three steps will help you to successfully complete your tutorial before OPT. Let us understand the three steps in detail. Start Early means it is advisable to complete the tutorial at least a few months before your program completion date to give yourself ample time to gather documents and submit your application. When we say Take Notes,  it is always good to keep a notebook  or digital document  with important points from the tutorial, as it can serve as a quick reference during the OPT process. What we meant as Reach out for help is if you have any questions or concerns while completing the tutorial, do not hesitate to contact your university’s international student service office for assistance.

By completing this tutorial, you will be well prepared to navigate your OPT application process smoothly and ensure you stay compliant with all requirements.

Does this vary from state to state?

The requirements for OPT are generally set by federal guidelines and apply uniformly across all states. However, there can be some variations in how universities and employers interpret and implement these requirements. The core OPT requirements, such as eligibility criteria, application process, and duration are determined by federal regulations and apply to all F-1 students nationwide. Some universities may have additional requirements or specific processes for their students. This can include mandatory online tutorials, specific documentation, or deadlines. While federal regulations govern OPT, state specific employment laws can affect your work experience. For example, some states may have different minimum wage laws, working conditions, or additional document requirements for employment verification. So, it is advisable to follow your specific university guidelines and requirements for OPT. Be aware of the application deadlines and the importance of timely submission to avoid any gaps in your work authorization.
