How to manage responsibilities as a Hadoop Administrator?
Creating, editing and inspecting the Hadoop Cluster happens to be core ideologies of an Hadoop Administrator. However, cluster administration alone is not the sole responsibility of the Hadoop Administrator. Training and Expertise for Hadoop Administrator are provided mainly to play a consistent role of managing the Hadoop environment. Distribution of Hadoop which includes the Hadoop cluster requires the attention and inspection of the Hadoop expert to avoid any data disruptions on Hadoop distributions from Cloudera, Hortonworks, Apache and MapR. Apache distribution is, of course, the Open source Hadoop distribution.

Being an administrator, the Hadoop Admin should install and initialize Hadoop cluster on the Hortonworks/Cloudera distribution. It will be easy and simple if he has the fluency on configurations files will be present on startup. However, in the case of the open source Apache distribution of Hadoop, which has to be manually setup with all the configurations such as Core-Site, HDFS-Site, YARN-Site, and MapRed-Site. There are many other responsibilities of Hadoop Administrator as follows,
- Streamlining and coordinating with the Technology Support Team
- Need to propose and deploy new hardware and software environments required for Hadoop and to expand existing environments with the help of Technology Support Team
- Cluster maintenance as well as creation and removal of nodes using tools like Ganglia, Nagios, Working with data delivery teams to set up new Hadoop users. This job includes setting up Linux users, setting up Kerberos principals and testing HDFS, Hive, Pig and MapReduce access for the new users.
- Responsible for implementation and ongoing administration of Hadoop infrastructure.
- Cloudera Manager Enterprise, Dell Open Manage, and other tools.
- Monitor Hadoop cluster connectivity and security
- Diligently teaming with the infrastructure, network, database, application and business intelligence teams to guarantee high data quality and availability.
- Performance tuning of Hadoop clusters and Hadoop MapReduce routines.
- Screen Hadoop cluster job performances and capacity planning
- Manage and review Hadoop log files.
- File system management and monitoring.
- HDFS support and maintenance.
- Collaborating with application teams to install the operating system and Hadoop updates, patches, version upgrades when required.
