Creating SAP ABAP HR Reports (using LDB)

With effective SAP ABAP HR customizations and developments, developers can create a remarkable business value and business focus in an organization. Thus, numerous businesses want their workforce to acquire fluency with SAP ABAP HR platform. Here, in this article, let us examine a step-by-step procedure to create SAP ABAP HR reports using an LDB.

What is LDB?

LDB is the acronym of Logical Database. SAP HR contains a logical database (LDB) which enables ABAP programs to access various database tables. It provides a read-only access and there are several advantages of using LDB to create SAP ABAP HR reports.

  • Central authorizations are automated

  • Increased performance in accessing database tables

  • Inspecting user-inputs with an inbuilt validation

  • Usage of standard selection screen to access meaningful data

Types of LDBs

PNP

PNP is a logical database in SAP ABAP HR which is mainly used for administering human resources, time management of human resources and payroll processes.

PNPCE

This is a customized version of PNP which handles the payroll, time management and administration of human resources with concurrent employment functions.

PCH

This SAP ABAP HR logical database handles data pertaining to organizational management, event management, and training & personality development duties of an organization.

PAP

This is a logical database in SAP ABAP HR which is dedicated to the recruitment process of human resources.

In this tutorial, we will create a report using the LDB PNPCE and I strongly suggest you to use PNPCE over PNP in all your new developments because it includes all the functions of the PNP logical database and offers additional evaluation options. Also, it provides us an improved selection screen and your report benefits from this even if your programs do not use the functions for evaluating Concurrent Employment.

Steps to create SAP ABAP Report using LDB:

#1 Creating new program - First step is to create a new program that can execute the reports. To do that, navigate to SE38 transaction code and then specify a name for your program. To finish creating the executable program, press 'Create' button.

#2 Category Assignment – The next step is to assign the appropriate category of the report. In order to specify the report category, go to the home screen, locate the ‘Attributes’ radio button and choose it before clicking on ‘Change’ button. Now an ‘HR Report Category’ button appears where you can assign the relevant report category.

#3 Custom Report Categories – To do this, click on ‘Report Category’ button and then click the ‘New Entries’ option. Now, you can specify the name for your ‘Report Category’ with description.

#4 ABAP Coding – Now we have to provide the coding that contains NODES statement to process data when the report is executed. After providing all the essential coding in this section, save the program.

#5 Activating and testing the report – This is the final step of creating SAP ABAP HR report where the program needs to be activated and test.
