Power BI is a compilation of applications, software services, and connectors that combine to derive insightful data and present visually immersive and interactive. We might have stored or saved our data in the Excel sheet or cloud-based or on-premises hybrid data warehouses. Power BI will enable us to easily derive data from your data sources, help present visually, which is crucial, and aid in sharing with anyone you want.

The Parts of Power BI

Power BI is well known for its features that work together with these three basics:

  • A Windows desktop application called Power BI Desktop.
  • An online software as a service (SaaS) service called the Power BI service.
  • Power BI Mobile apps for Windows, iOS, and Android devices.

All these elements of Power BI, including Power BI Desktop, the service, and the mobile apps, enable you to create insightful data, share it, and help you serve effectively.

These three features do not restrict power BI elements; it also includes two other elements:

Power BI Report Builder:

Designing pixel-perfect paginated reports: Power BI Report Builder enables users to create highly formatted, printable reports with precise control over layout and formatting for professional-looking documents.

Users can leverage Power BI Report Builder to create paginated reports seamlessly integrated with Power BI dashboards and visualizations, providing a comprehensive reporting solution.

Power BI Report Server

On-premises solution: Power BI Report Server allows organizations to host and manage their Power BI reports and dashboards on their servers, providing greater control and security over their data.

Customization and flexibility: Users can customize and personalize their reports and dashboards and schedule automatic data refreshes, providing a tailored and dynamic reporting solution.

How Power BI matches your role

Now, how we can utilize Power BI depends on your roles in our project. Here is where we need to focus because, based on the requirement, the utilization of the Power BI feature might differ.

For example:

We might use the Power BI service to view reports and dashboards. The business report creator in any organization utilizes Power BI Desktop or Power BI Report Builder to create reports. After creating insightful content, publish it to the Power BI service, where every coworker can view it.

Another coworker in the sales department in the same organization might use the Power BI Mobile app to observe sales progress and can drill new lead details on sales.

For instance, if you are a developer, you can use Power BI APIs to integrate Power BI capabilities into your applications, allowing for seamless data visualization, analysis, and reporting within your existing software. By leveraging Power BI APIs, developers can access and manipulate data, create custom visualizations, embed reports and dashboards, and automate various application tasks. This level of integration enhances the functionality and value of their software and provides end-users with powerful and intuitive data analytics tools without having to leave the application environment.

Use each element of Power BI at different times, depending on what you're trying to achieve or your role in a given project.

Moreover, Power BI Desktop allows users to create visually compelling and interactive reports and dashboards from various data sources, enabling better insights and decision-making.

Based on the organization's or project's requirements, we can utilize Power BI. Due to all of these features, it is so flexible and compelling.

The flow of work in Power BI

To begin our workflow in Power BI, we must first connect data sources in Power BI Desktop and need to build the report. After creating the report in Power BI Desktop, we can publish and share it in the Power BI service. So, business users in the Power BI service and on mobile devices can view and interact with the report.

Use the deployment pipeline tool

The deployment pipeline tool within the Power BI service allows you to test content before releasing it to your consumers. The deployment pipeline tool facilitates the deployment of reports, dashboards, semantic models, and paginated reports. Learn the fundamentals of initiating deployment pipelines in the Power BI service.

Paginated reports in the Power BI service

Paginated reports in the Power BI service are a type of report that is designed for printing and sharing. These reports are highly formatted and pixel-perfect, making them ideal for creating invoices, financial statements, and other documents requiring precise layout and formatting. Paginated reports are created using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), a product separate from Power BI. However, with the integration of SSRS into the Power BI service, users can now create, publish, and view paginated reports directly in the Power BI service.

One of the critical benefits of paginated reports is that they provide a consistent and reliable way to present data to stakeholders, regardless of the device or platform being used. They can be exported to various formats, including PDF, Excel, and Word, making them easy to share and distribute.

On-premises reporting with Power BI Report Server

Power BI Report Server allows for on-premises reporting by enabling the creation, deployment, and distribution of Power BI reports within a private network. Users can design interactive and data-rich reports using Power BI Desktop and then publish them to the on-premises Power BI Report Server.

This on-premises solution ensures data remains within the organization's infrastructure, addressing security and compliance concerns. Users can access these reports via a web portal, providing a centralized hub for on-premises reporting. Power BI Report Server offers flexibility for organizations that require on-premises solutions for sensitive data while leveraging the advanced reporting capabilities of Power BI.

In conclusion, Power BI is a comprehensive business intelligence solution that empowers organizations to leverage their data effectively. Power BI enables users to make informed decisions based on accurate and visually compelling insights by providing a user-friendly interface, robust data analytics capabilities, and cloud-based collaboration. Its flexibility and scalability make it a valuable tool for businesses of all sizes, helping them drive efficiency, uncover trends, and stay competitive in today's data-driven landscape.
