DevOps, the latest trend in IT, is an IT service delivery tool. Literally combining development and operations to form its name, its main aim is to emphasize on communication, integration and collaboration between software developers and IT operations.Insimple words, DevOps is a practice by which operational as well as development engineers work in collaborationall throughout the lifecycle of a product starting from design ranging to development and production support.

DevOps is an enterprise software development practice. By now, it must be quite obvious that implementing DevOps is not a simple task. It is a mixture of tools, people and processes and an integration of all these three factors is quite difficult to achieve. Many enterprises start to implement it on a high note but fail miserably due to the lack of integrity and proper training.

DevOps Infrastructure

Here is a list of some major mistakes which you should avoid, if you wish to make your project a success.

Learn From Your Mistakes

Mistakes or experiences, it does not matter what you prefer to call them as long as you are willing to learn from them. Unless you are heading an organization that’s quite new, chances are high that in all probability you have been a part ofa major organizational change. It’s time that you review the change and get a good idea about what worked for your organization and what did not. Find out which communication system had the greatest impact and which resources were quite helpful. A good analysis would make you aware of your strengths and weakness and help you to decide about the course of action.

Prepare For a System Overhaul

DevOps demands a complete overhaul of the business structure, which justifies the need of the initial investment beinghuge. So if you are working in an old, outdated system, do not ever think of implementing DevOps in a step by step measure. DevOps is a continuous cloud delivery system, with the process from coding to production going in the cloud at a particular time. Trying to implement the DevOps system in a step by step measure would only result in loss of money, time and labor.

Don’t Forget to Create a Perfect Team

Creating the perfect team is very important. Most often, what happens is that the IT personnels emphasize a lot on the IT operations side, ignoring the role of developers. Remember, clouds written for and by developers are far more successful than those written by the management people. All successful DevOps transition is actually achieved by deep involvement of developers.

Deal with Resistance

We all know that people in general are resistant to change. When you are planning to overhaul the entire system, it is likely that you would meet with considerable challenge. Prepare a roadmap of how you are going to deal with this change and how you would convince your employees to embrace the change. Arrange for training sessions and prepare e demo’s through which you can convince them about the advantages of the new system. If you are dealing with a large organization where thousands of people are involved and a large infrastructure is at stake, the problem might become even more intense.

Prepare a Financial Plan

When you are planning to overhaul the entire architecture of the firm, it is quite obvious that you would require a huge amount of capital investment. Your investors would not be willing to invest unless they are convinced about the effectiveness of the plan.

Make a plan to convince the investors, so that you can have the funds to implement your ideas. People feel involved in a project when their opinions are counted. So involve everyone in the decision making process and ask for feedbacks. This would help you to understand their mindset and help you to plan accordingly.
