Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is a standardized exterior gateway protocol planned to interchange routing and reachability information between autonomous systems (AS) on the Internet.

The protocol is often classified as a path vector protocol but is sometimes also classed as a distance-vector routing protocol.

BGP can be used only under the following circumstances:

• Multiple connections exist to external AS’s like the Internet through different providers.
• Multiple connections exist to external AS’s over the same provider, but connect through a separate CO or else routing policy.
• The surviving routing equipment can also hold the additional demands.
• The real benefit of BGP is in controlling how the traffic enters the local AS, other than how the traffic exits it.

• BGP permits for routes to be designed before that they are given out to peers, over the use of implementation-specific policies.
• BGP uses timers to avoid a quickly changing route from being frequently advertised all over the internet.
• BGP protocol exchanges can be authentic so that individual trusted routers can join in the routing exchanges.
• BGP is used to exchange Internet routes.
