What is Business Motivation Model (BMM)?

Business Motivation Model (BMM) refers to the scheme and structure for developing, communicating and managing business plans in an organized fashion.

BMM is a necessary prerequisite for business owners, entrepreneurs, Business Analysts, Enterprise Architects and C-suite managers who are responsible for building the business strategy of an organization.

BMM was originally conceptualized by the Business Rules Group (BRG). In September 2005, it was adopted as a subject for RFC (Request For Comment), a process before a model is approved as a standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

At the core of BMM is the intent to capture and justify what the business is trying to achieve, the plans it has laid to achieve its objectives and the results will be measured.

To achieve that, BMM has what is called elements. The various elements of BMM include:

Ends: The goals that the business wants to achieve
Means: The resources that the business has to achieve its Ends
Directives: The Rules and Policies that will govern the use of Means
Influencers: The changes that are ought to happen to the organization through achieving its Ends
Assessment: The judgement of an Influencer and how it impacts the organization in achieving its Ends
