Most of us like high flying jobs- jobs that let us travel, pays for the stay, apart from compensating for the work done. If you thought, this is something only top-notch business executives, lawyers, pilots and air hostesses enjoy, here is a surprise for you. Welcome to the world of clinical research executives!

You might wonder how come a job that is all about developing new medicines and testing their result allow someone to enjoy such perks. The truth is that during the first year of your job as a clinical research associate you shall be required to travel almost 70% of your time to remote locations to oversee that the standard parameters of testing the medicines are being followed by various camps.

Managing protocols, preparing reports and overseeing the process of work can be quite demanding on your mental and physical health. However, the good news is, once you move up in the spectrum, this pressure decreases significantly and you are given more of an in-house job.

Here are some tips which would help you to survive in the initial days of your career.

Mind Your Manners

When you travel twice-thrice in a week over different time zones, the body and the mind tend to feel cranky. You might be tempted to lose your cool and act bossy. Our tip is to refrain from doing so. Do not strain your relationship with the staff at the site. You might come across several regulation flaws and discrepancies in the expected procedure. Instead of writing a harsh report about the site co-coordinator, you can try to show him his faults and guide him regarding proper procedure. A friendly approach would help you get what you want from the site and the co-coordinator more easily.

Be Up-To-Date

It is important to remain up-to-date. Complete all your assignments and trainings in time and attend every seminar, no matter how worthless you feel it is. Stick to your delivery date and measure your contributions. This would help you to present a detailed report to your supervisor regarding your performance. However, remember to keep the balance. Being too ambitious can actually have a negative impact on your career.

Learn a Different Language

In the initial days of your career, you shall be required to travel a lot. This travel can be both domestic and international. Having a good knowledge about a different foreign language would provide you with better job opportunities.

Don’t Switch Job Too Early

The job of CRA is quite demanding and inability to travel back home can tempt you to leave your job or bad mouth your seniors or the site co-coordinator. None of these are actually solutions in the physical world. These things would only aggravate your problem in a bigger way by creating a negative reputation in the industry.

Don’t Expect a Six Figure Income Too Early

If you wish to become a clinical research analyst only for the sake of money, you are absolutely in the wrong league. Trainee CRA‘s do not earn a six figure salary. In fact it takes a long time for trainees to reach a level, where they can command that amount of compensation.

Family Expectations

Before you choose the job of a CRA, make sure you talk to your family well in advance. Once you choose this job, you may not be able to give too much attention or time to family in the initial days. Unless you have very supportive family, do not think about pursuing this career path.

The job of a clinical research scientist is very exciting and rewarding, provided you are willing to put in the required hard work patiently for initial few years.
