As a C++ language, C# pronounced as C Sharp is an Object-Oriented programming language. As against popular belief, C# is not just used to develop Distributed Applications; it can be used to develop any type of Software applications, even Windows applications.

Well, what exactly can C# do for you?

Indeed, a lot. C Sharp could do anything. Unless and otherwise you are writing a non-Microsoft platform centric code, C Sharp can be used to write Web applications, Windows clients applications, Enterprise software, Mobile apps, backend & service-oriented applications, and lots more.

Let us have a look at the applications of C Sharp in detail:

Windows Client Applications

Well, Windows client applications tend to run on the Windows OS as executables. These applications have existed ever since Microsoft introduced the Windows OS in 1985. The development of Windows applications was perhaps the first use of C Sharp programming language exactly when Microsoft made an announcement about it in 1999.

At present, Windows Forms & WPF are major technologies that are used to develop the Windows client applications. Moreover, C Sharp can be used to write both non-UI console and the WPF Browser based applications. In fact, Visual Studio 2013 supports 4 project templates that include WPF application, Windows Forms application, Console application, & WPF Browser application.

Listed below are a few common properties Windows applications feature:

    • Run on Microsoft Windows OS

    • Typically executables (exes) & dynamic link libraries (DLLs)

    • Run on a PC & take all resources right from the local machine

    • Have user interface provided with Windows controls like menus, buttons, dialogs & forms/windows

Components & Controls

    • Components & controls are libraries that are used to build something which is easily sharable as well as distributable. C Sharp is a most commonly used language to create components & controls in the world of Microsoft. An ideal example of sharable control is a chart control. An ideal example of a library which can be designed by a developer & easily distributed to different other developers so as to be utilized in their applications is the GPS library.

    • Visual Studio 2013 supports 5 project templates that include Portable Class Library, Class Library, WPF User Control Library, WPF Custom Control Library, & Windows Forms Control Library.

Windows and Web Services

    • Well, Windows Services has existed since early Windows days. Visual Studio has a Windows Service project template which is used to build a Windows Service making use of C Sharp and VB.NET.

    • On the other hand, web services were primarily introduced to offer remote communication among the devices over the web. The key purpose of Web Services is to offer data accessibility & updatability remotely employing internet protocols irrespective of the OS, platform, application and client browser. In physical terms, a web service happens to be a software application that runs on a Web Server which could be called by the outside applications making using of the internet to access as well as write data. As far as the world of Microsoft is concerned, web services are generally developed using ASP.NET; hence it is called ASP.NET web services. Despite the fact that the exposure & connectivity of Web Services utilizes ASP.NET, backend can be built using C Sharp language.

Windows Store Apps

There are two tracks for developing Windows Store apps:

C# & XAML are primary languages used to build the Windows Store apps. While XAML is used to create app screens, C# is used as a language that probably runs in the backend.

Mobile Apps

Pretty obviously, mobile apps run on the mobile devices. Apple iOS & Google Android are major players as far as the mobile app market is concerned. Microsoft seems to have its own Mobile OS – the Windows Phone. Apparently, C# language is employed to build the Windows Phone apps.

The above mentioned are several uses of C#. In summary,C# language has certainly come a long way ever since it got introduced in the year 1999. With enough experience and knowledge, it is possible to build almost any kind of application making use of C# and related tools.
