Five Essential Skills That Can Help You to Launch a Career in Business Analytics
Imagine being in a foreign country where no one understands or speaks your language. What if you suddenly come across someone who can work as a translator for you? Sounds like a God sent angel right? A business analyst is also like a translator in the business domain. His main job is to get information from different groups of vendors, executives, customers and technical people and look at the problem from the perspective of a bigger picture. His role is not confined to any particular industry, which makes his job equally interesting and challenging.
Let us make it clear that business analyst certification does help you in acquiring several skills to succeed. But there also exist some soft skills which are transferable from one person to another. However there are certain basic skills which should be present in a candidate in order to get a position of a business analyst.
Communication Skills
This is the defining characteristics of any business analyst. Getting the right information from a person requires patience and logical thinking. People usually do not give you everything that you need in a platter. You need to have the patience to listen to them attentively and absorb all the information that you need for your job. Outstanding communication skills play a very vital role in establishing a good relation with the concerned individuals, by which you can gain their trust and rely on their co-operation in times of need.
Problem Solving Skills
Your job does not end at securing the required information. In fact it only begins from there. A business analyst should have outstanding analytical skills, which can help him to decode the information and identify the root of the problem. Once the problem is identified he needs to look for a solution keeping in mind the various scenarios. Sometimes the problem is simple and using new software can solve the issue while at other times, the problem is really complex and may require negotiations between multiple stake holders.
Technical Skills
Almost all major business nowadays is based on softwares that operate on some platform, using some technology. Sometimes the problem that plagues the entire system only requires a minor change in data code or demands a software update. In order to fix such problems it is essential that a candidate has adequate business analysis training in the technical domain. The ability to test software and design business systems is an important business analysis skill which would help you to gain respect and build confidence in a world that lays such a huge amount of importance on technology.

Besides maintaining a good relation with the stake holders it is important that he is able to maintain his deadlines and adheres to his commitments so that he can gain the trust of the management. The role requires a clever mix of ambiguity along with negotiation skills, to avoid any kind of unwanted conflicts.
Flexibility
If you aspire to become a business analyst, be prepared for a job that would demand late night shifts, frequent travel and ability to adjust under any situations. Business process of any organization is hardly limited to any country of city. Since most international business has geographical presence, you should be ready to live out of the suitcase.
Team Building
Last but not the least, no matter how wonderful and efficient business analysis skills you poses, your efforts would fall flat on the ground if you are not a team player. Your ability to co-ordinate structure and lead teams would ultimately define your success in this domain. You should have the skills to maintain balance between each team so that any stressful situation does not arise within the workplace and harmony is maintained.
